Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) were used in various fields including coating, biomedical devices, and sensing. The production of hydrophilic GQDs is indisputable due to the oxygenated functional groups, which effectively enhance the aqueous solubility. This study investigates the effects of different GQDs concentrations on the wettability and surface energy of thin film GQDs. The GQDs were initially prepared using hydrothermal synthesis from different concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and were deposited onto substrate using drop-casting method to form thin film GQDs. The contact angles were measured through the water droplet to evaluate wettability and performed zeta potential analysis to assess colloidal stability. Young's Dupré equation was employed to measure the surface energy through the work of adhesion between test liquid and solid substrate, and FTIR analysis used to recognize the functional group contributing to the observed trends. The finding reveals a significant dependence of wettability on GQDs concentration. Lower concentrations of GQDs (GQDs1 and GQDs2) resulted in a hydrophilic surface property of contact angles (62.83°, 66.57°). However, higher concentrations of GQDs (GQDs3 and GQDs4) exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity as reflected by the reduced contact angles (36.43°, 36.83°) with stronger solid-liquid adhesion, WSL (131.07 mN/m, 131.37 mN/m). Higher concentrations of GQDs demonstrate good dispersion stability as evidenced by zeta potential measurement. FTIR analysis highlighted the irregular interrelation between the GQDs functional group and their influence on contact angle and stability. This study offers insights into tailoring GQD thin films for sensing and surface engineering applications, particularly in controlling and enhancing wettability.
