Abstract

The study was conducted at screening house to determine the resistance levels of several potential varieties against colonies of brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens collected from nine different localities in Peninsular Malaysia. Assessment using SSST method found two varieties, MR286 and MRQ89 have shown high level of resistance to all of the colonies tested, followed by MR284, which was moderate resistant to most of the colonies except colony originate from Seberang Perak of which is moderately susceptible. Rice varieties MR283 and MR278 were moderately resistant to most colonies but susceptible after been tested to colony derived from Kodiang, Kedah. Resistance levels of control varieties MR253, MR263 and MR269 varied between moderate resistant to susceptible depended on colonies used in the testing. Field study found that moderate resistant varieties do not show immunity. Brown planthoppers can still be found in varieties and they play a role in keeping predator populations in the field.
